When Duncan arrived with us last year, he clearly showed signs of middle child syndrome.  He came to Mane Chance with Hamish and Teddy and had the central position of the three.  Hamish was most definitely the boss and Duncan respected that, understanding that Hamish made the decisions for them all.  But this in turn had a slightly negative effect on Teddy as Duncan occasionally threw his weight around, pushing Teddy off hay nets etc as if to prove to everyone that he also had some strength and importance.  Joining Mane Chance threw all of that into a bit of disarray as suddenly there were more in the herd that had their own idea of what the pecking order should be and they all needed to agree.

Considering the very different personalities that were involved, the integration went amazingly smoothly – Duncan is obviously one who is very happy in the middle position, as he is neither one of the leaders of our herd of now eight Shetland ponies or one of the lowest in the pecking order.  He enjoys a position of neutral which seems to suit them all!  The bonus of this position is that he is undisturbed by almost everything, so he can concentrate solely on being super friendly with all of us.  When any member of staff, volunteer or visitor heads towards the area of the Shetlands, he is one of the first to trot happily over for a cuddle and a scratch.  His adorably fluffy coat means that he is just like hugging a teddy bear, and in fact, I am sure he would gladly go home with anyone and take prime position on their sofa!  When we received yet another Shetland into the Sanctuary a few months after he had joined us, Duncan was one of the first to get over the scepticism of the new boy and to let him join in – so he’s a sensible and welcoming boy too.
