Fred was an ex-competition horse who was no longer wanted. He is such a dependable horse in our herd. He performs many roles at the Sanctuary that are quite different, but he takes them all in his stride and he doesn’t seem at all perturbed by this seniority.
Firstly, and probably most importantly, he is companion to Tilly. Perhaps it would be more correct to say that Tilly is companion to Fred as sometimes it seems it is all on her terms, but actually, we know that Tilly would be lost without him too! Tilly can be a little fickle and if she doesn’t quite think that Fred is paying her enough attention, she knows how to trot off to another male horse and flirt outrageously until Fred has no option other than to centre his focus on her again, and then she innocently trots back to her man – job done! But Fred and Tilly are most certainly a couple and they are generally not more than a few metres apart. If one wanders a little, the other is always alert to where they are until the closeness returns. It’s a delightful relationship that is so joyful to watch – to see two horses so adoring of each other is heart-warming.

But for us as a team, we are so thrilled with the role that Fred is starting to play with our visitors too. He has already taken part in some pilot sessions of our Chance2Be course and has shown the most patient, gentle character.  He seems to know that the young people need him to help them with their journey – for them to be able to walk or groom such a large horse with confidence and calm is a huge step for them and Fred is clearly showing us that he is happy to teach them how to take it!  How proud we are of him and how we look forward to working with him over the coming months!
