Gwen is the most sensitive horse on the park. She was badly abused and the police reported that she was always tied up and regularly beaten. Eventually she escaped, only to be wild on common land for two years. While she was feral she gave birth to Phyllis and together they stayed wild and uncatchable. Both of them were later covered by a gypsy stallion who was also loose on the same area of land. We helped catch Gwen and Phyllis and brought them back to Mane Chance where both gave birth three weeks later.

Gwen now cares for and supervises her little herd wherever they go. More than that, we have recently started working with Lisa Benn, an equine behaviourist, and she has been getting to know the family herd (in which Gwen resides) really well.  Gwen has proved to be such a willing student with Lisa’s work – despite all her in-built reactions to resist any human interaction following the awful abuse she suffered prior to coming to us; she has learnt to step forward now to gently test the waters.  She is such an intelligent horse and approaches anything new with caution.  But as long as you are gentle and patient, she gives such great rewards.  She only needs showing once and she remembers – and as soon as she can overcome her natural hesitation, she succeeds.

This ability to trust new people is a huge step forward for Gwen as small as it might seem to us.  She has so much to give and if we can continue to encourage her to work with different people, we can give her such variety and enrichment working with our volunteers and visitors, which all will enjoy – most of all Gwen herself!
