Now that Horus has moved and is settled into the ‘thoroughbred’ herd with the others, it is lovely to see Millie back together with him.  Their relationship is a lot calmer than it was when they arrived together at the Sanctuary but considering the appalling circumstances that they had come from, that’s not really surprising.  They were separated into different herds for the continued wellbeing of both of them; so to know that they have progressed enough to be together again is so delightful.

Millie is a different horse to the one that came to us; but you have to remain alert with her still.  Her biggest difficulty is that she is not able to express her emotions properly and whilst she might come over for a scratch and cuddle, her ears are pinned back and it’s hard to read her true intentions.  She definitely falls into the ‘fight’ rather than ‘flight’ category and she can spin on a sixpence and knock you out of the way without a second warning.  But the number of occasions that this happens lessens gradually and she is able to form some really lovely relationships with the team here – we are not deterred!  Understanding the fears of the horse and giving them respect and space to heal is what makes Mane Chance what we are.  Each tiny step of co-operation and improvement are huge steps for Millie and we will take the whole journey with her – however long it takes!

The clicker training continues with her and she is really demonstrating the intelligent horse that she is – always one step ahead for treats and willing to participate.  This engagement is all part of the process and if there is the reward of a piece of apple or a scratched tummy, Millie appears to want to play!
