Tinker was one of three colts abandoned with no food or water in a field that opened onto the A3. He was so poorly when we picked him up that he would quite probably have collapsed and died within the month. He has changed a lot since those dreadful early days.

Tinker is now a big lad, a little clumsy it has to be said, but quite a chunky boy and it’s important that the energy and strength he has is channelled in the right direction. So with the help of our Equine Behaviourist, he has been taught more manners (some of them had lacked occasionally as he had worked out his size was quite useful in bossing others around) as well as more verbal commands.  He has been taken out of the herd on his own and walked around the site including round the pond, investigating new surroundings, surfaces and sights and he has done really well.  It’s clear to see his confidence growing, without being too over-confident of course!

We have just embarked on a new project at the Sanctuary, working with young people who have low self-esteem, low confidence or high anxiety.  Chance2Be is a course of sessions that combines the teaching of mindfulness-based techniques with calm time spent with the horses.  We are really hopeful that Tinker and other members of the family herd will become a big part of this project in working gently with the young people, so we have lots planned for him.  These lessons that we are teaching him now are all steps towards reaching the potential that we believe this horse has with our work.  Despite his size, he is a really kind hearted horse – we just need to teach him how to harness this enthusiasm into gentle interaction and he is already showing us that he is well and truly up for this new role!
