Anna came to us at Mane Chance when a call for help was received by all National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) members, of which we are one. A difficult decision had been made by a Sanctuary to close and they had nearly 100 horses to rehome. We agreed to help and took on a couple of horses, one of which was Anna. As an older mare, we knew that these are often harder to find homes for, so decided to welcome her into our Shetland herd and offer her a home for life. She is an older lady, but a terribly calm horse and has a very sweet personality. When we say sweet, we also should add that she knows what she wants and also what she doesn’t want – the word stubborn might apply at times and whilst she is adored by everyone, she can sometimes give us the run around if she doesn’t want to be caught – just trotting out of reach each time we come near! When Anna came to us, we saw that she was sensitive on her feet and our barefoot trimmers told us that her hooves had a few problems that meant that she was likely to often be quite sore. There is only so much that can be done through careful and targeted trimming and our trimmer has certainly worked wonders to make her feet so much better but we had to find a way to help her more. So Anna now has her own set of boots in her personal wardrobe which we put on if we are taking her out of the field onto hard surfaces. On grass she is barefoot, but if walked elsewhere, she sports these trendy shoes that means she can keep up with the rest of the Shetland herd and doesn’t get left out of any fun to be had!
