Equine best friend: Poppet

We received news that a large horse rescue had been forced to make the heart-breaking decision to close as they were no longer able to survive in the economic climate. With over 80 horses in their care, they appealed for other charities to help them via the National Equine Welfare Council of which we are a member – we were delighted to offer a home to two Shetlands, Anna and Poppet.
Anna is an older horse and came to us with known health conditions. She is prone to laminitis and suffers from Cushings disease, an illness that is caused when the pituitary gland is overactive and causes the production of too much cortisol in the body. It is a condition that can be managed with medication and provided we monitor the levels we can keep Anna very comfortable. We also know that the Shetland Project will provide a better environment for her as the grass there contains less sugar, which will aid the prevention of laminitis and support her mobility too. Anna has a lovely personality which is quite determined if she isn’t in the mood to be head collared - despite her advancing years she can still give us the run around if she wants to!!  She enjoys the freedom that she has at Mane Chance and adds a gentle and mature presence to the Shetland herd.
