Blesk came to Mane Chance as we were asked to help the RSPCA who had horses in their care following the closure of another Sanctuary. He is the tallest horse we have at Mane Chance and is a little clumsy with it, often being a bit boisterous with the other horses in his herd and even us at times! He needed to be taught some gentle manners when he arrived as he is not a young horse, and sometimes not only risked hurting others by his over-excitement, but himself too. He has gradually been encouraged to slow down, to enjoy some quieter moments of grooming with the team and to generally accept he can enjoy a retirement without so many dramas, bumps and bruises! We noticed when he arrived that he had a tendency to go lame on his forelegs after he had dashed around the field and had overdone it, so we asked the vet to have a look. He has been diagnosed with severe arthritis and we now give him daily medication to help reduce any pain and inflammation. It’s a difficult balance with a horse like Blesk to get the dosage right – if you give him too much painkiller, he forgets he has arthritis, tears around and then wonders why he is sore afterwards – too little painkiller and he lives with nagging aches and pain. So, we have struck a balance that we believe helps him – enough to give him pain-free days but not too much that he thinks he is invincible!
