Gwen

Year of birth 2009 (approx)
Height 14.0 hh
Date arrived at Mane Chance 2012
Gender Mare
Description in one word Resilient
Equine best friend: Jay-J

Gwen is the most sensitive horse at Mane Chance. She was badly abused, often tied up, regularly beaten and was found roaming on common land. During this time, she gave birth to Phyllis and together they stayed wild and uncatchable for a couple of years. Having then been moved on for a few months, they reappeared on the same council land again but this time, both were carrying foals - we were asked to help and they came to Mane Chance and gave birth a few weeks later - Gwen to Blue Boy. Phyllis gave birth to Bobbie Tulsa which means that Gwen is actually a grandma!
Gwen has a wonderful relationship with Jay-J, a gelding that arrived at Mane Chance and who immediately became a companion to her.  He rarely leaves her side and is a huge support – together they are ‘parents’ to the younger horses and all the herd know that they take no nonsense.  We spend much time with Gwen on a daily basis helping her to build her trust with humans and let go of the bad experiences of the past. It is a slow process but she is doing so well and is lapping up all the attention.  From a horse that would not come near us at the beginning to the blossoming horse that she is now is true testament to the extraordinary animal that she is.
